An interesting development
Somerset docked 12 points:
As of now, Warwickshire are 12 points ahead of Somerset in the Championship table.

At last! A lot of people are complaining that Somerset prepare great pitches, but they’ve been taking advantage for years. Too many times 20 wickets have fallen on the first day.

Yes this has been on the cards for a while now.
You can hardly say this comes as a surprise. The question is how did they get away with it for so long.

I do wonder why Somerset frequently produced two-day pitches in recent years. Yes, they have three quality spin bowlers but they also have a more than decent seam attack and strong batting. Why not just play it straight?

I still fancy they will finish ahead of us next season.
I agree that Somerset have a good, balanced squad.  I guess the emphasis on spin has been because many other sides are not as strong in this department so it gives them an advantage.  I seem to recall that they didn't produce a turning pitch when Jeetan played against them last May.
Maybe the new groundsman will produce different pitches, though the old one only seems to have been following orders.
I always thought that Somerset were a well-run county; but something must be wrong for them to be without a chairman, a chief executive and a chief operating officer.  As Oscar Wilde might have said: "To lose one top official may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose three looks like carelessness.”

I think Somerset had pushed the line on what was an acceptable pitch rather too often and a points deduction is reasonable.
But I hope we don't go back to a situation where a pitch that spins on day 1 is seen as a problem whilst a green seamer is acceptable.  It's not a coincidence the two best young spinners in English cricket play for Somerset where they get assistance from the pitches.

Can't say that I am surprised by this; Somerset have been sailing close to the wind for a while now, although as Terry suggests above, I seem to remember the pitch being a green top when we visited in May. Obviously the groundsman is following orders, as traditionally the pitch at Taunton was an absolute shirtfront.

I have no problem with the home side playing to their side's strength (Remember visiting Northampton 15 years ago when Northants had Swann, Panesar and Jason Brown in the team?) but for a pitch to be turning sharply from the start of the match is a bit much.
